English III Syllabus

Textbook(s): Prentice Hall Literature: The American Tradition plus a host of external sources. Outside Reading incorporating Literary Terms that pertain to plot may be used on Virtual Days.  This course presents a historical survey of American Literature from early development of North America to the colonial period and through the twentieth century.
 

Course Objectives:

  • The student will apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, appreciate and respond to a wide variety of texts and a variety of genres.
  • The student will expand vocabulary through word study, literature and class discussions.
  • The student will interact with the words and concepts on the page to understand what the writer has said; both a literal understanding and inferences.
  • The student will demonstrate knowledge of literary elements, figurative language and sound devices.
  • The student will express ideas effectively in written modes for a variety of purposes and audiences.
  • The student will use the writing process to write coherently.
  • The student will demonstrate appropriate practices in writing by applying Standard English conventions.
  • The student will conduct research and organize information.
  • The student will demonstrate thinking skills in listening and speaking.
  • The student will interpret, evaluate, and compose visual messages.

 

Grading:  Students will be graded according to their performance on:

  • Daily work and homework assignments
  • Outside Reading tracked w/AR (emphasis on classical literature and non-fiction)
  • Essays/Research and Writing Portfolio (writing fluently for a targeted audience)
  • Individual and Group Projects
  • Prepare a Resume
  • Quizzes
  • Tests
  • Plagiarism (the illegal use, stealing, or copying of another’s work; also known as a breach of copyright) will be dealt with harshly. It will result in the minimum loss of 1 letter grade for the semester grade.

 Grades will be posted in the online grade book in a timely manner.
